Why An Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Among the various ethnicities, there are distinct differences in the aesthetic appearance of the nose. Between Caucasians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Middle Easterners, and Asians, the structures and shape of the nose varies greatly. Some of the dissimilarities of the nose include the size and shape of the nostrils, the bridge width, the shape of the nasal tip, projection, and/or dorsal height. Ethnic rhinoplasty is designed to allow each patient to create the desired changes to his or her nose without having to worry about eliminating a part of his or her visible identity. With a thorough consultation, Dr. Toledo will evaluate your facial features and structures, including your nose’s overall size and shape. This allows him to ensure you obtain the most natural-looking results while still achieving the look you desire.

Typically, the structure of an African-American nose is identified by less projection, less definition, and greater width. Therefore, these patients may desire greater dorsal height with improved definition and symmetry. For a Hispanic rhinoplasty, many patients may desire a narrower appearance with increased projection, a more defined nasal tip, and nasal rotation. Asian patients request taller bridge and increased tip projection, so grafts and/or implants are often required during these procedures.

When seeking an ethnic rhinoplasty procedure, it is important for patients to pick an informed, skilled plastic surgeon. Dr. Toledo’s primary goal is to allow patients to receive their desired outcomes while still feeling connected to their ethnicity and cultural differences. With his 34 years of rhinoplasty experience, he can help you to feel and look your best.

Ideal Candidates

Ethnic rhinoplasty is designed to allow patients to create the desired changes to their nose without having to worry about eliminating a part of their visible identity. Through a thorough consultation, Dr. Toledo will evaluate your facial features and structures, including their overall size and shape. This allows him to ensure you obtain the most natural-looking results while still achieving the look you desire. It is no secret that people of different ethnicities have visual differences in certain facial structures, including the nose. Some of the dissimilarities of the nose include the size and shape of the nostrils, the bridge width, the shape of the nasal tip, projection, dorsal height, etc. At our Dallas, TX facility, Dr. Toledo’s overall goal is to create a nose that is harmonious, symmetrical, and in balance with your entire face and profile.

We at the Highland Park Plastic Surgery Center do our best to select patients who have realistic expectations. I will not attempt surgery unless I feel I can get a significant improvement. A photo of your nose will be uploaded to our imaging software, and I will do a computer rendering of what you may look like. The vast majority of the time I will achieve 80-90% of the changes I show you on the computer. Again, if I do not feel like I can get an 80-90% improvement on a primary rhinoplasty, I will not operate. Revision rhinoplasties are much more difficult and sometimes an improvement of only 50% is considered a satisfactory result.

The majority of my patients present for cosmetic rhinoplasty and not because of nasal airway obstruction. Rhinoplasties usually involve making the nose smaller, less projected, and narrower. Smaller noses do not breathe as well as larger noses. An exception is when a nose is broken and very deviated, therefore significantly blocking the airway. I will do everything possible to straighten the inside and outside of your nose, so hopefully the rhinoplasty will not negatively affect the airway. Having a smaller nose that also breathes better is not always possible, so if a better airway is more important, leave your nose big and wide.

On a final note, plastic surgery is not an exact science. No matter how hard I have tried, I have never created a “perfect” nose in over 3,000 attempts.  If you stare at any nose long enough, especially in a magnifying mirror, you will find some slight asymmetries. All faces are asymmetrical to begin with. If you are a “perfectionist” and expect a “perfect result”, you may be disappointed. Patients with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) will never be happy. So please consider this information before scheduling your rhinoplasty surgery.

Surgical Technique

Ethnic rhinoplasty is performed in our state-licensed ambulatory surgery center under general anesthesia. The entire procedure typically takes about 1 – 2 hours, but this time will vary between patients, as each procedure may involve different surgical techniques according to each patient’s individualized treatment plan. Based on the individual’s needs, Dr. Toledo may either use an open or closed technique. Following the completion of the procedure, the incisions will be sutured closed, and the nose will be dressed with a cast on the outside; internal splints may also be placed if the septum was operated upon.

What to Expect

The recovery process for an ethnic rhinoplasty is the same as for a standard rhinoplasty. You may experience some swelling, bruising, soreness, and discoloration under the eyes for the first 1-2 days following your procedure. Elevation of your head and anti-inflammatory medications can be used to help relieve these symptoms. Follow-up appointments will also be scheduled so that Dr. Toledo can evaluate results and recovery, as well as remove splints as needed.
