About Neck Liposuction

Dallas, Texas board certified plastic surgeon Dr. George A. Toledo has extensive experience liposuctioning the neck to create a more defined jaw line and an overall slimmer neck appearance. This liposuction procedure helps decrease jowl heaviness and reduce the double chin. To learn more about liposuction and see if you are a good candidate for this procedure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Toledo at the Highland Park Plastic Surgery Center.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for neck liposuction at the Highland Park Surgery Center are men and women close to their ideal body weight that have excess diet-resistant or genetic fat in their neck; they must also have tight neck skin. In patients over 40 years of age, the skin may not contract, which results in loose skin after liposuction. These patients often look worse after liposuction, as the loose skin makes them look older. For these cases, a lower face/neck lift will be needed to correct this deformity. Dr. Toledo and the staff of the Highland Park Plastic Surgery Center will take the time to evaluate each patient to ensure he or she is an excellent candidate for this procedure.

Surgical Technique

For neck liposuction, Dr. Toledo uses tumescent local anesthesia with and without intravenous sedation; this depends on patient preference and the amount of fat to be removed. A very small cannula less than 2 mm in width is inserted through the neck skin to remove excess fat.  The skin opening is so small that no sutures are required after the procedure. Once adequate contouring is achieved, Band-Aids are placed over the entry points, and a gentle pressure bandage is used to prevent swelling and easily adhere the skin to the underlying muscles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the fat come back after a neck liposuction procedure?
Fat cells that are removed through liposuction do not grow back. However, if you gain a significant amount of weight following a liposuction procedure, your neck can increase in size if the remaining cells expand—especially in areas of your neck that were not suctioned. This is why Dr. Toledo recommends you be at a healthy, stable weight before undergoing neck liposuction. It is easier to maintain your results with a healthy diet and exercise.

Should I consider Kybella instead of liposuction?

The short answer is no. Kybella is a synthetic acid that destroys fat cells. It requires up to six treatments spaced one month apart, and each treatment involves 20 to 50 needle punctures. Each procedure causes significant swelling and downtime, and it is also very expensive.

Neck liposuction by Dr. George Toledo at the Highland Park Plastic Surgery Center takes 30 minutes and can be performed under local anesthesia with no incisions—just a couple of puncture wounds—and only 48 hours of wearing compression bandages. Neck liposuction is a simple predictable procedure as long as you select a good, experienced surgeon, and he selects an excellent candidate

Should I get a neck lift or neck liposuction?
Dr. Toledo will help you decide if you need a neck lift, neck liposuction, or both during your consultation. In general, a neck lift helps remove excess skin, while neck liposuction only reduces stubborn pockets of fat. In many cases, a combination of a lift and liposuction can yield beautiful results toward achieving a smooth, even neckline. As a general rule, if you are under 40 years old, you may be a good candidate for only liposuction. If you are over 50 years old, you are probably best served with a neck lift, which not only removes excess fat but also tightens the skin and muscles. See our facelift section for more details. Visit Dr. Toledo at the Highland Park Plastic Surgery Center to discuss all of your concerns and goals during your consultation in order for him to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
