What is the recovery from rhinoplasty like?

So, you've decided to undergo rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job! You may be wondering, what's the recovery process like post-surgery? Well, let's dive into it!

Rhinoplasty, Ethnic Rhinoplasty, Revision Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that alters the shape of your nose to enhance your appearance. The procedure can vary based on your unique needs and goals to keep the face in harmony. Ethnic rhinoplasty is a specialized approach that respects and preserves your cultural features while enhancing the aesthetics of your nose. It's crucial to work with a surgeon who understands and celebrates diversity in nasal shapes and skin types. Revision rhinoplasty is a secondary procedure done to correct or improve upon a previous nose job. The revision rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult cosmetic surgery procedures.  It requires skill and expertise to address any issues from the initial surgery successfully.

What to Expect After Surgery

During the recovery period, it's essential to follow Dr. Toledo's instructions diligently. You may experience swelling, bruising, and  mild discomfort, which are normal and should subside over time. Resting, staying hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activities can aid in a smoother recovery. Upon discharge from the Highland Park Plastic Surgery Center, you will have a small metal cast across your nose. It is important not to get the cast wet in the shower. You may feel drowsy from anesthesia, so go home and rest.

The morning after surgery you will be called at home by our staff. Most patients do not report feeling pain but will report having a "stuffy nose" or feeling "congested". This is completely normal and is caused by the surgical swelling. This feeling typically resolves in days but can persist in some patents for a couple of weeks. The morning after surgery you will clean the stitches and around the inside of your nostrils with hydrogen peroxide using a Q-tip. This removes dried blood or crustiness. You can resume everyday activities including working within 48 hours but wait 3 weeks for strenuous workouts. After the first 24 hours there are no restrictions on travel.

Day 5 to 6- You return to our clinic from cast and outside sutures removal. You will be more comfortable using our private post-operative waiting room for your initial postoperative visits. If splints were used to stabilize the septum, those may be removed during this visit. Even with the swelling, the patient should have a good idea of what their nose will look like.

One Month- If you live close to the DFW metroplex, Dr. Toledo would like to examine the nose to make sure you are healing as expected. Out of state patients can email photographs to help us evaluate their postoperative results.

3-6 Months- At this visit you will have postoperative photos taken. If there is still a small amount of swelling, postoperative photos would be taken a few months later.

Annually- Dr. Toledo recommends seeing you —at no charge—every year (or as able) to follow the results. This allows Dr. Toledo and his staff to better evaluate patient outcomes and continue to refine techniques in the future.

Remember, every individual heals differently, so be patient with the process. If you have any concerns or unusual symptoms during your recovery, don't hesitate to contact your surgeon for guidance. Overall, the recovery from rhinoplasty requires patience and proper care, but the results can be truly transformative. Trust your surgeon, follow their advice, and soon you'll be enjoying your new and improved nose!
