Amy:
Self-confidence is so important, especially to young women, and having large, heavy breasts can limit participation in everyday activities. Sometimes, a breast reduction can be life-changing.

Amy:
Dr. George Toledo and his patient, Whitney, join us now to talk about this surgery that's sometimes necessary for a woman's health. Good morning to both of you.

Whitney Foster:
Good morning.

Dr. Toledo:
Good morning, Amy.

Amy:
Dr. Toledo, I was surprised to learn that 110,000 breast reduction procedures were performed last year, so talk about this procedure and how a breast reduction works.

Dr. Toledo:
People think plastic surgery's all about making breasts bigger and breast enlargements, but there's a significant percentage of the population whose breasts are just too big. It can be young girls going through puberty, and all of a sudden, the hormones just balloon the breasts out. Or even older women, as they gain weight, get older, and then the menopause enlarges your breasts, and some genetically are just big. It's as much of a problem physically as well as emotionally because it's hard to get clothes to fit. It's hard to do any kind of exercise.

Dr. Toledo:
So, we have a good friend, Whitney, today, that has a very unique story.

Amy:
Yeah. She's nodded her head with everything that you're saying, Dr. Toledo. This could really change a woman's life. We're talking about being embarrassed, being uncomfortable, just everyday functionality with your body was difficult, and you're a dancer.

Whitney Foster:
Absolutely.

Amy:
So, I want to take a look at your before picture to kind of demonstrate what you were struggling with and what you weren't happy with and cute outfit by the way.

Whitney Foster:
Thanks.

Amy:
And now, let's look at this after picture, after you've had the breast reduction. Nice difference. Obviously, as a dancer, cumbersome to be top-heavy, so talk about what bothered you before and how this has changed your life.

Whitney Foster:
To be completely honest, this actually started in high school. I wanted this surgery 11th grade maybe? Everything was very difficult for me, whether it be cheering, whether it be dancing. I always had spillage out of the top or out of the sides. I was uncomfortable, and so when I found out that I can actually have this service, I was like, "Where can I sign up?" And then, they were like, "Dr. George Toledo in Highland Park does a great job." So, I absolutely called him right up, and I said, "Dr. Toledo, I need your help. Fix me," and he did a great job.

Amy:
So, you're happy. I can see this on your face.

Whitney Foster:
I am very happy. Yes.

Amy:
So, talk about your recovery and what it's been like for you.

Whitney Foster:
Recovery, honestly, was very easily. At that time, I was in school, so I literally did what the doctor told me. He told me, "You know what? Rest for week, and then you'll be back on your feet," and so that's what I did. I slept for a week, and then the next minute, I was back in school.

Amy:
I love it.

Whitney Foster:
Yeah.

Amy:
She's so happy and cheery, and I can tell you're a dancer. And obviously, this is not a cosmetic procedure for looks. This was really about improving your quality of life.

Whitney Foster:
Absolutely.

Amy:
And so, what would you say, Dr. Toledo, to a woman who maybe has been considering this for a long time like Whitney was and has been a little apprehensive?

Dr. Toledo:
Well, yeah, the side effects are minimal really. There's some scarring involved and maybe a little discomfort, but, God, the benefits so far outweigh that. Whitney was, I would say, maybe a double D, and now, she's a C, but there's some women with breasts that actually hang down to their thighs. I mean, very, very huge breasts, and those, it's a life-changer for them. It was a little bit of a life-changer for Whitney. She could still be a cheerleader, but for others, it's really huge improvement.

Amy:
Okay. All right. Well, thank you for sharing your story with us today, Whitney, and doctor-

Whitney Foster:
Oh, of course. Thank you for having me.

Amy:
You're welcome. Dr. Toledo, always good to see you.

Dr. Toledo:
Right.
